2009 Maine Chinese Language Conference

---How to build up Chinese program in Maine schools.

Friday, November 6, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm - the Wells Conference Center, University of Maine.

In conjunction with the Maine Department of Education, the University of Maine and Orono High School, the Chinese Language and Culture Center (CLCC) and Bangor Chinese School (BCS) will present the 2009 Chinese Language and Culture conference on November 6, 2009. We would be honored to have you as a guest and speaker and would be grateful for the opportunity to share with you highlights of Chinese language and culture teaching and learning in Maine.

Our theme this year is "Building Strong and Sustainable Chinese Language and Culture Programs in Maine and Establishing Partnerships between Maine and China."

This conference hopes to host 150 participants. These will consist of superintendents, school board members, administrators, teachers, parents, and members of institutions of higher education statewide. Political, business, and intellectual leaders from the United States and China will present keynote or plenary speeches, while numerous breakout sessions will offer information and strategies ranging from program design to community outreach.

Other invited guests include Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe; chief executive of the Office of Chinese Language Council International, XU Lin; education counselor of the Consulate General of China in New York, Jianjun Chen; executive director of Chinese Language initiatives at the Asia Society, Shuhan Wang; world languages specialist of the Maine Department of Education, Donald Reutershan; president of the University of Maine, Robert Kennedy; chair, Department of Modern Languages & Classics of the University of Maine, Raymond Pelletier; and former principal of Orono High School, Bruce Bailey.

The conference will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 4:30 pm at the Wells Conference Center, University of Maine. Focus areas include the following:

Chinese teaching and learning in USA and Maine

Establishing sister-state partnership between Maine and one province of China

Chinese history, culture, philosophies, landscape, business and environmental issues

Registration fee: $100 before August 30, 2009
$110 before September 30, 2009
$125 after September 30, 2009

The primary audience for the seminar is any one who is interested in Chinese language and culture.

"China, in particular," Gov. John Baldacci noted two years ago, "is an important nation to understand. It is an ever-emerging economic player, even as its culture - with thousands of years of history - is transforming as a result." Therefore Chinese language and culture are essential for understand China and expanding Maine into the global community. The Seminar is all about Chinese language and culture. You will meet our speakers, six professors and several of eight (8) guest Chinese teachers who came to Maine this year; an authentic Chinese lunch for all attendees. This will be a very enjoyable day!
